15 Self-Study eLearning Courses

In addition to the Primary 4 Courses, we provide yearly continuing education. This series of courses satisfies the annual 15 hour continuing education requirement mandated for CBRF employees by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS 83.25). Our continuing education package contains not only the minimum required content, but also subject matter related to Covid-19, Customer Service / Communication, Food Safety and Sanitation, Individual Service Plan (ISP), and Managing Urinary Incontinence. This expanded package of subject matter encompasses a broader topic range, making participants safer, and more well-rounded employees. Allowing participants to complete the yearly continuing education courses at their own pace can provide flexibility and accommodate different schedules and learning styles, ultimately enhancing their experience and retention of the materal.

Caregiver Continuing Education Package

Advanced Aging

Advanced Aging Continuing Education focuses on understanding the unique needs and challenges faced by older adults living in residential care facilities. This training includes:

  1. Physical Health: Educating staff about age-related health conditions such as dementia, arthritis, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, and how to provide appropriate care and support.
  2. Mental Health: Teaching staff about the psychological aspects of aging, including depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline, and strategies for promoting mental well-being.
  3. Mobility and Falls Prevention: Providing techniques for assisting residents with mobility issues, implementing fall prevention measures, and recognizing risk factors for falls.
  4. Nutrition and Hydration: Educating staff on the nutritional needs of older adults, addressing appetite changes, and promoting hydration to maintain overall health.
  5. Communication and Socialization: Training staff on effective communication techniques to engage with residents, address their emotional needs, and foster social connections to prevent loneliness and isolation.

Challenging Behaviors / Client Group

Challenging Behavior / Client Group Continuing Education is focused on providing caregivers in Community-Based Residential Facilities (CBRFs) with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage and support clients with challenging behaviors. This continuing education covers:

  1. Understanding the causes and triggers of challenging behaviors in clients.
  2. Techniques for de-escalating challenging situations.
  3. Strategies for promoting positive behavior and preventing challenging incidents.
  4. Communication skills for effectively interacting with clients displaying challenging behaviors.
  5. Legal and ethical considerations related to managing challenging behaviors.

The goal is to equip caregivers with the tools they need to provide appropriate care and support to clients with challenging behaviors while ensuring their safety and well-being.

Covid-19

COVID-19 Continuing Education is designed to educate caregivers working in Community-Based Residential Facilities (CBRFs) about the prevention, management, and response to COVID-19. This continuing education covers various aspects, including:

  1. Infection control measures: Proper hand hygiene, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), and cleaning and disinfection protocols.
  2. Recognition of COVID-19 symptoms: Identifying signs of illness in residents and staff, including fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.
  3. Prevention strategies: Implementing social distancing measures, limiting visitors, and promoting vaccination among residents and staff.
  4. Emergency response: Protocols for isolating suspected or confirmed cases, notifying health authorities, and providing care while minimizing transmission risk.
  5. Regulatory compliance: Following state and federal guidelines and regulations related to COVID-19 in CBRFs.

The goal is to ensure that caregivers are well-prepared to protect the health and safety of residents and staff in CBRFs during the pandemic.

Customer Service / Communication

Customer Service / Communication Continuing Education is designed to enhance the communication skills of caregivers working in Community-Based Residential Facilities (CBRFs). This continuing education focuses on improving interactions with residents, their families, and other staff members to provide high-quality care and support. Key components of this training include:

  1. Effective communication techniques: Teaching caregivers how to listen actively, express empathy, and communicate clearly and respectfully.
  2. Understanding resident needs: Helping caregivers develop the skills to recognize and address the individual needs and preferences of residents.
  3. Conflict resolution: Providing strategies for resolving conflicts or disagreements in a constructive and professional manner.
  4. Building rapport: Encouraging caregivers to establish positive relationships with residents and their families to enhance trust and satisfaction.
  5. Handling complaints: Teaching caregivers how to address and resolve complaints or concerns from residents or their families in a timely and effective manner.

Disability Awareness

Disability Awareness Continuing Education is designed to educate caregivers working in Community-Based Residential Facilities (CBRFs) about various disabilities and how to effectively support individuals with disabilities. This continuing education covers:

  1. Understanding different types of disabilities: Learning about physical, cognitive, sensory, and developmental disabilities, and their impact on daily life.
  2. Person-centered care: Emphasizing the importance of recognizing each resident as an individual with unique needs, preferences, and abilities.
  3. Communication techniques: Teaching caregivers how to communicate effectively with residents with disabilities, including using alternative communication methods if necessary.
  4. Promoting independence: Providing strategies for supporting residents in performing activities of daily living and fostering autonomy.
  5. Disability rights and advocacy: Educating caregivers about the rights of individuals with disabilities and how to advocate for their needs and preferences.
  6. Assistive devices and accommodations: Familiarizing caregivers with various assistive devices and accommodations that can help residents with disabilities live comfortably and safely.

Fire Safety

Fire Safety Continuing Education is aimed at providing caregivers in Community-Based Residential Facilities (CBRFs) with ongoing training and updates related to fire safety protocols and procedures. This continuing education includes:

  1. Fire prevention measures: Educating caregivers about strategies to prevent fires from occurring in CBRFs, such as proper storage of flammable materials and regular maintenance of fire safety equipment.
  2. Fire detection and alarm systems: Training caregivers on how to recognize and respond to fire alarms, including evacuation procedures.
  3. Emergency response: Providing caregivers with knowledge and skills to respond effectively in the event of a fire, including safely evacuating residents and contacting emergency services.
  4. Evacuation drills: Conducting regular evacuation drills to ensure that caregivers and residents are familiar with evacuation routes and procedures.
  5. Regulatory compliance: Updating caregivers on any changes to fire safety regulations and ensuring that CBRFs remain in compliance with relevant laws and guidelines.

First Aid and Choking

First Aid and Choking Continuing Education focuses on providing staff with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively to medical emergencies and choking incidents. This training covers:

  1. Basic First Aid: Teaching staff how to assess and respond to common medical emergencies such as cuts, burns, falls, seizures, and allergic reactions.
  2. Choking Response: Instructing staff on how to recognize and assist individuals who are choking, including performing abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) and back blows for adults and infants.
  3. Medication Administration: Training staff on proper procedures for administering medications in emergency situations, including understanding dosage, routes of administration, and documentation.
  4. Emergency Communication: Educating staff on how to communicate with emergency services and provide necessary information in case of an emergency.
  5. Documentation: Ensuring that staff understand the importance of documenting any first aid interventions and incidents for resident records and regulatory compliance.

Food Safety and Sanitation

Food Safety and Sanitation Continuing Education focuses on ensuring that staff members understand and follow proper food handling, storage, and preparation procedures to maintain a safe and hygienic environment. This training includes:

  1. Foodborne Illness Prevention: Educating staff about the causes and symptoms of foodborne illnesses and how to prevent them through proper food handling practices.
  2. Personal Hygiene: Emphasizing the importance of personal hygiene, including handwashing, wearing clean uniforms, and avoiding food handling when sick.

Individual Service Plan

Individual Service Plan Continuing Education involves regularly checking and updating care plans to ensure that residents receive appropriate and accurate care. This includes:

  2. Documentation: Keeping detailed records of care provided and any changes in residents' conditions or preferences.
  3. Monitoring: Observing residents to ensure that care is being delivered according to the ISP and making adjustments as needed.

  5. Reviewing ISP: Periodically reviewing the ISP with residents and their families to ensure that it reflects their current needs and preferences.

Managing Urinary Incontinence

Preventing Abuse and Neglect Continuing Education focuses on educating staff members about recognizing, preventing, and reporting instances of abuse and neglect within the facility. This training includes:

  1. Understanding Abuse and Neglect: Educating staff about the different forms of abuse and neglect, including physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse, as well as neglect of basic needs.
  2. Recognizing Signs: Teaching staff how to recognize signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect in residents, such as unexplained injuries, changes in behavior, withdrawal, or fear.
  3. Prevention Strategies: Providing strategies for preventing abuse and neglect, including promoting a culture of respect, setting clear boundaries, and providing adequate supervision and support for residents.

  1. Understanding Resident Rights: Educating staff about the rights guaranteed to residents by law, including the right to privacy, dignity, autonomy, and choice.
  2. Communication and Respect: Teaching staff how to communicate respectfully with residents, listen to their preferences and concerns, and involve them in decisions about their care.
  3. Confidentiality: Emphasizing the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of residents' personal information and medical records.
  4. Freedom from Abuse and Restraints: Instructing staff on residents' rights to be free from abuse, neglect, and unnecessary restraints, and how to prevent and report such incidents.
  5. Access to Services: Ensuring that residents have access to necessary services and resources, including medical care, social activities, and religious services.
  6. Complaint Procedures: Informing staff about the procedures for residents to file complaints or grievances, and how to handle and address these complaints in a timely and respectful manner.

Standard Precautions

Standard Precautions Continuing Education focuses on educating staff members about infection control practices to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases in the facility. This training includes:

  1. Understanding Standard Precautions: Educating staff about the concept of standard precautions, which involves treating all blood, body fluids, non-intact skin, and mucous membranes as potentially infectious.
  2. Hand Hygiene: Emphasizing the importance of proper hand hygiene, including handwashing with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
  3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Instructing staff on when and how to use PPE such as gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection to protect themselves and residents from exposure to infectious agents.
  4. Respiratory Hygiene/Cough Etiquette: Teaching staff about covering coughs and sneezes, using tissues, and disposing of tissues properly to prevent the spread of respiratory infections.
  5. Environmental Cleaning: Providing guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting frequently-touched surfaces and resident care equipment to reduce the risk of infection transmission.

Workplace Violence Prevention

Workplace Violence Prevention Continuing Education focuses on educating staff members about strategies to recognize, prevent, and respond to incidents of violence in the workplace. This training includes:

  1. Understanding Workplace Violence: Educating staff about the different forms of workplace violence, including physical assault, verbal abuse, harassment, and threats.
  2. Recognizing Warning Signs: Teaching staff how to recognize warning signs of potential violence, such as aggressive behavior, verbal threats, or signs of distress in residents or coworkers.
  3. De-escalation Techniques: Providing training in de-escalation techniques to defuse tense situations and prevent escalation to violence, such as active listening, empathetic communication, and problem-solving.
